Caillois's Terminology

How games you know well allow for gameplay that can be defined as either paidia and/or ludus

I feel that Bioshock can be defined under Ludus. Throughout the game you are told to follow strict missions and objectives on a very refined route that runs through the game, Not allowing the player to 'Free roam' or do things they might enjoy more. Without following these objectives and missions you would not be allowed to progress through the game.

I feel that GTA V can be defined under paidia. One of the biggest selling points about the GTA franchise is the ability for the player to Free roam throughout the game right from the start. This gives players the option to do missions within the game, or do whatever they want during free roam, Giving players a freedom and much more enjoyable experience when playing being able to choose exactly what they want to do and not being forced to follow Rules within the game.


How games you know well fit into the categories of agon / alea / ilinx / mimicry or combinations thereof.

I feel that the Halo franchise fits into the Agon category. Besides its standard campaign option the majority of the game revolves around online competitive 4v4 matchmaking game types including Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag, Oddball, King of the Hill, Free for all and many more. Needless to say all of theses game types are strictly based on getting the most kills or completing the objective in order for your team to win.

    Is there an element of mimicry in Halo as players use militaristic avatars?

    Also, can spawn points be considered to add an element of alea?
